For over three decades, Lions Clubs worldwide have sponsored a unique art contest that empowers students to express their visions of peace. This year, Granville Jr/Sr High School is excited to participate in the Lions Club Peace Poster Project, inviting students to inspire the community through their creativity.
The theme for this year’s Peace Poster contest is “Peace without Limits.” Under the guidance of Art Teacher Todd Houston, 7th grade art students are exploring this powerful concept through drawing and painting lessons.
As a Marine turned educator, Mr. Houston believes in the transformative power of art. He states, “Teaching for peace beats fighting for peace.” His students created a Peace Gallery, where they illustrated their interpretations of what “peace without limits” means to them.
Posters were evaluated based on criteria such as artistic talent, creativity, organization, and attention to detail. The best posters were presented to the Granville Lions Club, which selected one poster to represent Granville in the Lions Club District Governor competition. The winning poster was by Joshua Jones! Joshua's entry will continue to advance, hopefully culminating in the International Lions Club competition.
“This art class for seventh graders sets the foundation for an Arts Enhanced Regents Diploma,” Mr. Houston explains. This is an advanced high school diploma that showcases students’ artwork and requires additional coursework in the arts. The art department encourages students with an interest in the arts to continue their studies, offering electives in Studio Art, Digital Arts, and New Media.
Granville Jr/Sr High School is proud to provide multiple pathways to graduation, encompassing Science, Technology, Civics, World Languages, the Arts, and direct-to-workforce pathways in technology, manufacturing, health and engineering.
