Family Fun and Learning: ELA/Math Night at Granville Elementary School
What do you get when you add math and ELA with games and pizza? You get ELA/Math night, a great time for students and families!
Over 80 students and family members were on hand at Granville Elementary, ready to learn through interactive games and activities.
"We are all so busy, so spending quality time with family is important. The ELA/Math night provides an opportunity for families to come together, learn, and bond in an enjoyable environment," said Principal Donohue.
Interactive Learning Through Play
The games and activities were designed to make learning fun. There were math games like math facts cards and tangrams. Flip It and Times It had students use cards to solve facts and race opponents to see who could solve the most first. There was also an Estimation Station where students estimated the number of candies in a jar. The student who came the closest won the jar as a prize!
Some activities involved the mind and the body. In Hockey, students read a word (or had an adult read it) and decided how many syllables were in the word. If they were correct, the student got to shoot a plastic hockey puck into a goal to win a prize. In Hopscotch Sight Words, the student would throw a bean bag, read a word, and jump over the board. There was even a Reader's Theater where kids could act in a mini-play together.
Families also had the opportunity to bring the reading and math fun home! The PTO held the scholastic book fair and there was also a chance to “adopt” a book from teachers. There were math games to take home and a link to a website with lots of other games and activities.
GES student Brantley said his favorite part of the night was playing in the gym. “The math mats and floor hockey was a really fun way to learn. I also like that the book fair was open,” he said.
Connecting School and Home
Parents play a crucial role in their child's education, and events like ELA/Math night offer a glimpse into what goes on in school. It provides them with valuable tools and resources to help their children with their schoolwork at home. When parents are actively engaged, it has a positive impact on their children's academic and social development.
“ELA/Math Night fosters a sense of community and togetherness. Our families and teachers come together to show students learning can be fun, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose,” said Ms. Donohue.
